The Relationship Center is a special place. All counseling centers want to help people and most provide services from state licensed clinicians. What makes The Relationship Center special is the way we think about and approach counseling.  It’s the “secret sauce” that makes TRC so effective in helping individuals, couples, and families reach their goals. The TRC way of approaching counseling can be summed up in 3 words: Biblical, Clinical, and Professional.

Amazed

Our marriage was so horrible we thought Josh Spurlock would surely give us the green light that there was no hope and encourage us to go our separate ways. At least that’s what a previous counselor in town had told me to do. Instead, Josh used biblical principles to bring hope into a very dark, bleak situation. We saw Josh on and off for approximately three years. It took a lot of work to have the marriage we do today, but it was worth every penny and every session we attended with Josh. Josh is a phenomenal counselor. It was easy to even talk about those embarrassing, tough topics with him. God really used The Relationship Center to restore our marriage. Anything is possible when you’re willing to get help, implement what you’re being taught, and add Christ as the third party in your relationship. Instead of being a single Mom to three kids, I now have the marriage I only thought existed if I was with someone else. It really is unbelievable.

Perfect

The Relationship Center was perfect for our marriage at a very critical time. The crisis was handled and the issues that had to be addressed were brought to the forefront. Each issue was dealt with to resolution before working on the next one. The honest approach and no-nonsense no excuses accepted approach was right on. The skill of the staff was key to our success. The skills that we were given have made our marriage better than it has ever been. Our time with TRC not only saved our marriage but made it amazing.

Faith Centered Approach

I would like to thank Josh for his help in building a strong biblical foundation in our marriage. It is normal to experience situations that cause difficulties in your marriage, but having the courage to step out and ask for help from a faith centered therapist such as Josh can help ensure that God’s plan for your marriage is revealed. Josh Spurlock is a true man of faith that honestly cares about your marriage and is committed to taking a biblical approach to therapy in an effort to equip you with the tools that are essential for continued success and years of mutual understanding and happiness.

Life Changing

Absolutely TOP NOTCH! These guys are the best of the best. SO good at what they do and being able to hear what you are not saying. They don’t want to keep you sick in an effort to collect money. Their hearts are truly at the center of Jesus and healing. It’s changed my life. I’ve gone for 5 or more years and I’m still there. Best money and decision I’ve ever made in an effort to change my life and relationships. I’m so grateful for the investment Rebecca and Shaun have made in my life and the confidence and encouragement the two of them have given me. Both are equally special! Exactly what I needed for my process.

Made all the difference for us

Investing in christian counseling made all the difference for us. We had come to a point in our marriage where we were not communicating with one another. We had kids, careers, schedules and routines, and felt we were functioning well enough. What we didn’t have was a connection to one another. We each approached situations from our own perspective never taking time to realize how that impacted the other, or how we had come to have that perspective in the first place. The counseling process allowed us to reconnect with ourselves and to one another and provided tools for us to use when we weren’t with our counselor. We consider it one of the best investments of time and finances we have ever made! We would recommend the counseling process and our counselor Rachelle Colegrove without hesitation.

The TRC Approach

Biblical

At The Relationship Center being “Biblical” means more than that our therapists have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus and attend church. This is true of all our counselors, but that’s only the beginning. For us being Biblical means that our clinicians have formal and ongoing training in Biblical studies. We take seriously understanding and interpreting the Bible in proper context and applying it accurately to the circumstances of life our clients face. All of our clinicians are either ministerially licensed or are in the process of becoming licensed. We believe ministerial licensure is an important part of recognizing the spiritual nature of the counseling ministry, as much as state licensure is an important part of the professional. Central to this philosophy is the conviction that as believers and kingdom workers we will give account to our Lord for every word of counsel given in every session we conduct. It’s accountability to this Truth that drives our commitment to being Biblical.

Clinical

We believe the Bible is sufficient to provide all necessary direction for salvation and Godliness. We also believe that there is a great deal of benefit that can be gained from studying the research findings of modern mental health and employing the “best practices” (known as evidenced based practices) for treatment. We believe these two concepts, the sufficiency of Scripture and the benefits of modern psychology, are complimentary and not in conflict. All truth is God’s truth. Good scientific research will support the Biblical testimony and lead to the skillful application of its principles. For us, being “Clinical” means that we educate ourselves and employ the best evidenced based practices of the helping professions when serving our clients. It also means that all of our clinicians have completed at least a Masters degree in mental health and are licensed with the state to practice counseling.

Professional

At TRC we have incredibly high standards for ourselves that we are always pushing to improve. It’s not enough for us that our therapy services be the best possible. It is non-negotiable that the entire client experience be excellent. From the time you first visit our website or call into our center until your very last session we want your experience to be flawlessly professional. Every aspect of the way we do things is intended to make it easy and convenient to get the help you seek. We will treat you with the utmost of respect, care for you with the best practices available, and protect your privacy in every way. That’s how we do things.

Marriage Counseling

God intended marriage to be thoroughly enjoyable, more days than not, until we part from our spouse at death. Unfortunately, for many, this isn’t the case. I work with couples who want to figure out why they aren’t enjoying each other and their marriage and how to fix it. I experience a high degree of success with couples who are both willing to work to see things improve.

Sex Therapy

Sex is God’s idea. He intends for the sexual part of our life to be incredibly enjoyable, full of passion, and revealing of His character. For a great many people, however, sex / sexuality is a source of frustration, confusion, pain, and disappointment. As one of just a few clinicians credentialed with the American Board of Christian Sex Therapists (ABCST) in southwest Missouri, I help individuals and couples troubleshoot their sexual difficulties and find solutions that bring peace and satisfaction in a God honoring way.

Affair Recovery

Few things in life are more painful or difficult to heal from than the deep sense of betrayal that comes from a spouses infidelity. Deciding whether or not to heal and restore a marriage or end it after such a betrayal can be an overwhelming process, with enormous consequences. Living out the decision is equally as challenging. I help couples sort through the important considerations and navigate the path they choose.

Philosophy, Training, and Education

I founded The Relationship Center to be a place where families and individuals could find help that is both clinically sharp and true to the Bible. My conviction is that this approach we call integrative therapy brings together the very best insights clinical research has produced and the timeless principles of Scripture that have the power to transform lives.

Intent on bringing these two disciplines together in more than a superficial way, I completed an undergraduate in Biblical Languages (consisting of 3 years of Greek and 2 years of Hebrew) and a Masters in Counseling. My theological studies equipped me to deeply understand the Bible, it’s principles, and it’s message. My studies in counseling taught me how to understand people and the challenges they face in comprehensive way.

In the therapy room I rely on the Holy Spirit to help me integrate the two areas of study together in a way that brings about healing and growth for the individuals, couples, and families I serve.

I am glad to be a part of the team at The Relationship Center, providing counseling which integrates the Scriptures and sound clinical practice.  It’s my passion to see people who are trapped and hurting set free through God’s power.

In preparation to provide help, I attended Evangel University in Springfield, MO, where I majored in psychology.  Following graduation, I enrolled at Assemblies of God Theological Seminary to complete a master’s degree in counseling.  There, my studies focused not only on the clinical aspects of counseling, but the Bible, understanding God’s Word and the firm foundation it creates.  In counseling, I work from this sure footing, integrating clinical skills to help clients effectively.

Men’s Issues

While we often lead others and ourselves to believe we are “fine”, as men, we do encounter hardships in life.  These concerns look different in men, than they do for women.  Men are not only physically different than women, the way they view life, handle problems, and interact in relationships is different.  At TRC, it’s my privilege to offer counseling that’s tailored specifically for men, integrating faith and clinical skill.  With God’s help, time and time again I have seen men overcome issues and become the man they were intended to be.  After all, it’s not what you run from but who you follow that defines you.

Sexual Addiction

While many people still aren’t aware of the issue, sexually addictive behavior problems are on the rise.  The internet and technology have revolutionized the way we do life, in many ways for the better, but have also helped to usher in an era of sexual bondage.  It’s never been so easy to engage in a wide array of sexually destructive behaviors.  People we regularly help here at TRC have struggled with pornography, masturbation, using escorts, personal ads/anonymous sex, seducing others, trading sexual favors, and swinging, to name a few.  We take part in ongoing education and training to understand and effectively help people wrestling with sexual  addictions.

Family Counseling

The family was God’s idea, He invented it.  Indeed, the Bible frequently refers to those who follow Jesus, confessing their sins and believing in Him, as being God’s children.  It should not come as a surprise, then, that the family is a prime target for the enemy.  Family struggles can take a real toll on all those involved, stealing the joy from our lives.  With that in mind, I work with families to rediscover God’s purpose for them and resolve issues weighing them down.

Women’s Issues

Though situations may be similar, we, as women, experience life differently than men. At TRC, I enjoy working with womenand helping them discover, or rediscover, their abilities and capabilities..

Chronic Pain and Illness

There is a grieving process that goes along with having chronic pain and illness.  The mental, physical, social, and emotional weight of dealing with chronic conditions can be overwhelming.  Together, we journey through the path to grieve what was lost and build hope for what is to come.

Trauma Recovery

When you experience a traumatic life event you feel lost and hopeless.  My goal in working with you is that we journey together so your never alone in your experience.  To walk with you to find healing and renewed hope.  Trauma experience can range from sexual abuse, personal experience or witness to violence, war, divorce, verbal or sexual assault, or unexpected death of a loved one. You may be a trauma survivor and not even know it.

Are you in despair? Many of the people who come to see me are. They have tried everything they can think of to overcome their depression, anxiety, or eating disorder. Therapy is a last resort. Most are desperate for healing. It is very difficult to face “I may not overcome this issue without help.” That’s where I come in. It’s important to me that you know I care about you and the difficulties you are facing. Having walked with so many on a similar journey, I understand what it’s like to be in your shoes. Most importantly, I know how to help you heal.

The path to healing is not an easy one. It starts with acknowledging the hurt and the injuries that cause the hurt. This can be scary. My job is to be a knowledgeable and supportive guide as you work through the hurts that hold you back. Though you may feel alone, you never have to be alone.

The majority of my practice is focused on:

  • Eating Disorders
  • Depression & Anxiety
  • Self-Harm

Eating Disorders

Battling an eating disorder is not something that can be easily overcome.  Whether you battle with over eating, under eating, or purging, I have walked with individuals down the path of healing. I understand that it takes great courage to face an eating disorder head on. I also understand that eating disorders can seem so difficult because you cannot simply give up food, even if you would like to.

Depression & Anxiety

Depression can seem like a fog with no way out.  Anxiety leaves you feeling like you’re always on edge. With both depression and anxiety, it can seem that there is nothing that can help. You may not even have the motivation to get help.  I have worked with many individuals who struggle with these same issues. There is hope, and there is help.

Self-Harm

Learning your child is suffering from self-harm can be very scary. Having worked with many parents in this situation, I can help you walk through getting help for your child. For those who self-harm, it can feel like the only way to feel emotion or run away from emotion.  It can be terrifying to continue cutting for fear of severely hurting yourself. It can also be difficult to imagine coping with life without cutting. It is possible to seek help and find healing. I work with individuals every day that experience these same emotions.

Caring for others has always been a gift and a passion of mine. I felt called into the field of psychology while in high school and more specifically therapy while in my undergraduate work. God has provided me with the gift to empathize with you as well as provided me the opportunity to obtain the education necessary to help you. It is my calling to show God’s love through serving you.

I know it is very hard to ask for help when experiencing any type of personal difficulty. I understand how vulnerable you feel. I care about the issues you are experiencing, and I know how to walk you down the path of healing. If you are ready to start the journey, I would love to hear from you.

One of the best decisions in my life

I have been going to Melissa for a little over a year now and I can honestly say it is one of the highlights of my week every week. I feel that she has helped me through so much already and is extremely easy to talk to about anything. I really appreciate her listening and offering me wisdom every time I see her. I don’t know how I would’ve managed getting through this past year of my life at times if I had started going to The Relationship Center. Also, I am so grateful that they worked with me financially to find something that fits my tight, college budget. I definitely tell everyone about this place when they ask me about where to go for counseling. Thank you so much. 🙂
